Moroccan Tassawuf, or Sufism, holds a profound legacy enriched by the active involvement of women throughout its history. With "Sisters of the Sacred Path," we celebrate this vibrant heritage by exploring the influential roles of women in shaping Moroccan spirituality and culture. Our journey into this amazing landscape reveals the continuous thread of feminine wisdom woven through the fabric of Islamic practice in Morocco.
Morocco’s Islamic history is replete with tales of women who as devout Muslims were leaders, educators, and pioneers. This tradition includes significant figures such as Fatima al-Fihri, the founder of the Qarawiyyin Mosque and University in Fes in 859 AD. The Qarawiyyin, recognized as the oldest functioning university in the world, was established under her patronage, highlighting the integral role women have played in fostering Islamic education and scholarship.
Historically, women in Moroccan have been custodians of spiritual knowledge and practice. They have led Dhikr circles—gatherings in which remembrance of Allah and poems of praise are recited and sung—which are crucial for spiritual growth and community cohesion. These gatherings, often exclusive to women, provide a space for spiritual reflection and communal support.
In contemporary times, Moroccan Tassawuf continues to see robust participation from women, known as Faqirat, who engage in spiritual practices, learning, and education. These women carry forward the traditions of their foremothers, teaching the Qur'an, Hadith, and Sufi practices, thereby shaping the next generation of spiritual seekers of God.
Dhikr gatherings led by women are a cornerstone of Morocco. In these sessions, the Quran is ever-present, as recitations fill the air, interwoven with teachings and reflections that illuminate the path of love and devotion to God. These gatherings are not just spiritual exercises; they are also a reinforcement of the social fabric, providing women with a sense of belonging and mutual support.
The culture of Morocco beautifully integrates the practices of Islam with the prophetic principles of honor and respect towards women. This harmonious blend is reflected in the everyday life of Moroccans and is a testament to the sound foundations of Islam as practiced in Morocco. Women are seen as integral in every capacity in their religious communities.
We believe in celebrating and continuing this rich heritage through our "Sisters of the Sacred Path" retreat. We invite women from around the world to join us in Fes to experience firsthand the spiritual legacy of Moroccan Tassawuf, led by the profound women who continue to shape it. Here, participants will discover a community of faith, learning, and spiritual rejuvenation a testament to the vibrant role of women in Moroccan Islam.
